Energy Saving Tips

Uncategorized May 07, 2020

While we are battling this microscopic COVID-19 enemy, at least we have the creature comfort of electricity powering our homes. In World War I and II, blackouts were imposed in some European countries requiring windows and doors be covered at night so no glimmer of light could be detected by enemy aircraft. Streetlights and vehicle lights were adapted to deflect light downwards.

Thankfully, our electricity is not restricted during the Coronavirus pandemic. But with more time spent at home, your utility bill may be increasing while your income may be decreasing. Here are some tips to lower your electric bill.

Save on Air Conditioning

Air conditioners are known energy hogs. With summer around the corner, electricity bills can jump up due to air conditioner use. Here are a few ways to keep A/C costs down:

· Use your air conditioner only when necessary. Take advantage of cool nights and not-so-hot days to give your A/C a break.

· Replace the filter, so your unit runs more efficiently.

· Installing ceiling fans allows you to set your A/C a few degrees higher.

· Add insulation to your attic and/or walls.

· Check around doors and windows for air leaks. Let’s not air-condition the outside!

· Call us to install a programmable thermostat. There’s no need for the A/C to run when you are able to go back to your regular work schedule.

Save on Heating Water

· Lower the temperature on your water heater a few degrees.

· Wash most clothes in cold water. (Note: If you are a health-care professional, or someone in your home is sick, wash clothes in hot water to disinfect them.)

· Line dry your clothes.

· Take shorter showers.

· Replace your shower head with a low-flow shower head.

Appliance Savings

· Set your refrigerator to 38 degrees and your freezer to 5 degrees.

· If an appliance totally breaks and needs replacing, get the most energy-efficient model for the money. · Eliminate “phantom loads” by using smart power strips for electronic gadgets that never truly power off – things like TVs, computers, printers, microwave ovens, even cell phone chargers.

Help from Power Companies

· Most electric companies will provide an Energy Audit of your home. Southern California Edison has an online Home Energy Advisor and PG&E has a Home Energy Checkup online. · Electric companies may offer different rate plans that could save you money. PG&E and Southern California Edison offer two Time of Use plans (one if you can avoid peak usage between 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily and the other if you avoid peak use between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.). PG&E also offers a Tiered use plan if your energy needs decrease in late afternoon and early evening.
